Invest in Beauty, Write It Off: The Art Tax Advantage
By Erick Stow • www.erickstow.com
In Canada, collecting art is more than personal—it’s powerful. For businesses, it’s also financially strategic. When you acquire original artwork from a Canadian artist and display it in a professional setting, you’re eligible for CRA-approved tax deductions—a little-known edge that turns cultural capital into economic advantage.
This isn’t just a purchase. It’s a move.
What Qualifies?
To benefit, the artwork must be:
• Original, not a reproduction
• Created by a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
• Valued at $200 or more
• Displayed in a work environment where clients or collaborators can see it
Yes, that means even a statement piece from an emerging artist (like me) can qualify—so long as it’s authentic and visible.
The Business Case for Art
When a qualifying business buys a piece of original Canadian art, that artwork becomes a capital acquisition:
• Claimed under Class 8 (Capital Cost Allowance)
• Deductible at 20% per year (declining balance method)
• If under $200, the full value can often be claimed 100% in Year 1 under Class 12
Example:
A $10,000 painting can yield:
• Year 1: $1,000 deduction (half-year rule)
• Year 2: $1,800 deduction
• And so on, until it’s fully depreciated
And for HST/QST-registered businesses? You can also recover sales tax paid via input tax credits.
When You Sell the Piece
• Sell below value? You may claim the remaining unclaimed amount as a terminal loss
• Sell above value? Any previously deducted amounts are recaptured as income, with gains taxed accordingly
Why This Matters
Buying art isn’t frivolous—it’s foundational.
It tells your story. Sets your tone. Shapes your space.
At Erick Stow Fine Art, I believe every piece should carry energy, legacy, and precision. When you acquire from me, you’re not just supporting a Canadian artist—you’re entering a lineage of visionary entrepreneurship.
You’re building wealth in more ways than one.
